As hard as Robin Thicke prays to the contrary, the song of 2013 was, without a question, Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” It passes all popularity tests: it is loved by both the YOUTH today who can’t get enough French robots and crotchety music critics who get off to early Chic B-sides, will be played at bar and bat mitzvahes and proms for decades to come (it’s the new “Cha Cha Slide”!), and doesn’t inspire countless HOT TAKES about “trivializing rape.”
Also, it’s damn catchy, which explains the 9,000,000 covers and tributes the Internet has recorded this year, many of which are contained in Stereogum’s “Get Lucky” supercut. Maybe Henry Rollins will finally check the song out?
